Young Adult Group

The Young Adult Group has been going on for almost a year and a half now. We have seen tremendous growth and excitement in our group. We get together every other Tuesday and have an interactive Bible study. Right now we are studying the book of John, the life of Jesus, and together everyone is learning the importance of a growing relationship with the Lord. Our vision as a young adult group is to grow together as Christians through fellowship and accountability. The time is 6:30. Please call the church office at 272-8885 for details.

Class on Worship

I am both honored and excited to be coming again to Word of Life from January through April, 2011, and teaching on Thursday evenings for 12 weeks on the “Biblical Foundations for Worship Expressions.”

We will be looking together at various biblical expressions of worship in light of the larger picture of worship in the life of every believer. A Tree can help to illustrate this:

  • Heart: The roots, so significant in the life of a tree, are like the Heart of Worship, for here our worship is anchored and guided.
  • Life: The trunk, which provides support and stability to the entire tree, can represent our Life of Worship.
  • Fruit: The Fruit of Worship on the branches comes directly as an outgrowth and development of the trunk.
  • Expressions: The leaves that feed and nurture the tree, protect the fruit, as well as provide beauty, are like our Expressions of Worship. It is these expressions that we will be studying, with a view to how they relate to our worship life.

Foundational Teaching: Each of our times together will include a Foundational Teaching, including such topics as:

  • The Nature and Significance of Biblical Worship Examples
  • Worship is Responding to God
  • Transparency and the Freedom to be Changed
  • Authentic Worship
  • Giving to God in Worship
  • Worship, Instruments and Prophecy
  • Praise and Thanksgiving

Words to Learn: During the class times we will be learning the significance of the 7 basic Hebrew words for ‘Praise,’ and each week we will be memorizing a Bible verse that is related to our study.

Doers of the Word: We will close our times together by studying and practicing expressions of worship to God in an applied setting, where we will be: singing…lifting our hands…standing…shouting…clapping…bowing…kneeling…laying prostrate…dancing…and moving in free worship and the prophetic.

For Credit: For those who desire to take the course for credit, attendance and participation will be very important, and there will be a final exam at the end, summing up what we have learned in our times together. Successful completion of the 12-week course and final exam will earn the student 1-credit toward possible continued study at Elim Bible Institute.

I look forward to joining with you and watching what God will do among us as we study His Word, practice His presence and express ourselves to Him in biblical expressions of worship!

Christmas Play

Inspired by the classic board game Clue®, The Present Is the Future is a fun and clever musical created by Katie Combs. Follow six kids as they navigate a house of mysteries to find the answer to a Christmas riddle presented to them by a mysterious host. Filled with outlandish characters, clever wordplays, campy satire, and fun songs, The Present Is the Future helps our kids at Word of Life learn that their fears, desires, and insecurities are similar to those from Biblical times. They also begin to understand that by accepting the “present” of Jesus Christ they receive the gift of a hopeful future.

The play will be at Word of Life on December 10th at 6:30pm. Refreshments will be served after. We would love to see you there!

DVD’s (filmed by a professional videographer) of the play will be available for $4 prepaid to Jim Blake. Contact Jim Blake by clicking on the link with any questions.

Bible School Info

by Harry Vellekoop

This fall we will be launching an in-church Bible school. While there are also plans for an adult Sunday School program to begin soon, the Bible school will be a much more in-depth and systematic approach to studying the Bible and Bible-related courses. The purpose of the school is not simply to gain more Bible information, but rather to experience more Christ-like transformation.

Many details remain to be worked out, but currently the plan is for one evening class per week (Thursdays) for 16 weeks (a semester) both in the fall and spring. The courses will require a small tuition charge, textbooks, assignments and regular attendance. We hope to be able to arrange for child care for an additional minimal cost. Arrangements are in the process for these courses to be recognized by Elim Bible Institute.

As details develop, more information will be forthcoming. Right now we want to make those of you who might be interested aware of this opportunity so you can begin making plans well in advance. The maxim is true that “A taught church is a strong church.” I would like to challenge every adult not to consider if you ought to participate, but rather to consider why you would not participate?

Current plans are for the class to begin on Thursday, September 9. The times for the class are 6:45 P.M. – 8:00 P.M.
